Telephone Advice Line Lawyer Opportunities
The Legal Services Society (LSS) is seeking applications from qualified lawyers for a contract to act as a telephone advice lawyer for the Telephone Advice Line (TAL).
The TAL will operate every weekday morning for three hours. Family lawyers will provide advice on family law issues to financially eligible callers. Calls will be screened by LSS intake staff and lawyers will log into the LSS phone system by remote access from locations throughout British Columbia. A small roster of lawyers will be chosen to provide the service on the basis of rotating three-hour shifts.
The contract is intended for a period of one year, commencing late September 2010. Provided the contract is being performed satisfactorily, it is anticipated that it would be renewed on an annual basis. The Legal Services Society shall have the right to terminate the contract in its discretion should problems in service be identified or if funding the project is reduced or eliminated.
As a TAL lawyer you will be expected to provide the following services:
- brief next-step advice to self-represented litigants on family law issues,
- information and referral to callers about family law resources,
- assistance in using the self-help guides available on the LSS Family Law Website, and
- your own telephone and e-mail capability compatible with LSS phone/computer systems.
Interested applicants should be experienced in all aspects of family law including representing parents in CFCSA matters. A preference will be given to lawyers who are currently on the LSS family law vendor list and have taken a reasonable number of family law referrals in the past.
Compensation:
An hourly fee based on the tiered rate for family law referrals contained in the LSS Guide to Legal Aid Tariffs – General Terms and Conditions.
Closing date for applications: September 7, 2010
To apply, please send your resume and a letter outlining qualifications to LSS by fax at 604-601-6195, by e-mail, or by mail to:
